Paycheck Fairness Act stalls in Congress ? Business Management ...

The Obama administration?s top workplace legislative initiative this year?the Paycheck Fairness Act?died last month when Senate Democrats failed to muster the needed votes.

Supporters say the bill would help close the pay gap between men and women. Business-backed opponents say it would add new restrictions on employers, including putting the burden on them to show that men-women pay gaps were caused by reasons other than gender, and ease the requirements for bringing lawsuits.

Colorado shooting victim?s brain condition helped her survive, pastor says

Anderson (Family photo)

A 22-year-old violinist who was shot in the arm and head during last week's theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., is expected make a full recovery, doctors say, in part because of a brain condition she didn't know she had.

[COMPLETE COVERAGE: Colorado theater shooting]

Petra Anderson sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including a bullet that entered her brain through her nose. But miraculously the bullet "traveled through Petra's brain without hitting any significant brain areas," Brad Strait, a senior pastor at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Englewood, Colo.?Anderson's church?wrote in a blog post after spending a day with her in the ICU:

The doctor explains that Petra's brain has had from birth a small "defect" in it. It is a tiny channel of fluid running through her skull, like a tiny vein through marble, or a small hole in an oak board, winding from front to rear. Only a CAT scan would catch it, and Petra would have never noticed it.

But in Petra's case, the shotgun buck shot, maybe even the size used for deer hunting, enters her brain from the exact point of this defect. Like a marble through a small tube, the defect channels the bullet from Petra's nose through her brain. It turns slightly several times, and comes to rest at the rear of her brain. And in the process, the bullet misses all the vital areas of the brain. In many ways, it almost misses the brain itself. Like a giant BB though a straw created in Petra's brain before she was born, it follows the route of the defect. It is channeled in the least harmful way. A millimeter in any direction and the channel is missed. The brain is destroyed. Evil wins a round.

Anderson has been removed from the ICU, Strait said on Wednesday, and her condition continues to improve.

"There is much ahead," he wrote. "More surgeries. Facial reconstruction, perhaps."

More than $164,000 has been already raised to help cover Anderson's medical costs. The Colorado native graduated from the University of the Pacific in May with a bachelor's degree in music composition, and had been accepted into the graduate program at the University of Maryland School of Music. She did not have health insurance.

[Also read: Donors give nearly $2 million to help Aurora shooting victims]

According to the pastor and the campaign's website, Anderson's mother, Kim Anderson, has terminal cancer.

A-Rod breaks hand, Seattle beats Yankees 4-2

SEATTLE (AP) ? Even as Alex Rodriguez writhed on the ground in pain, he didn't believe his left hand was fractured.

Turns out A-Rod was wrong, and now the Yankees will be without another of their star players.

"It's difficult. Tough break," Rodriguez said in almost a hushed tone after New York lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Tuesday night.

Rodriguez broke his hand when he was hit by an 88 mph changeup from Felix Hernandez in the eighth inning. He went down in considerable pain. The Yankees said he has a non-displaced fracture of the hand, and there is no timetable for his return. He will be placed on the disabled list and will remain in Seattle with the team for the series finale Wednesday.

Eric Chavez, Rodriguez's replacement at third base, had a similar injury in 2004. He was out for about five weeks.

"You hate to see a guy go down on something freak like that," Yankees' first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "I had a weird feeling it wasn't good."

Rodriguez was the last of three Yankees to get plunked in a five-batter stretch and that ended Hernandez's night. He also hit Ichiro Suzuki and Derek Jeter with pitches.

While not sharp, Hernandez had allowed only Curtis Granderson's first-inning home run and worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings.

The sudden loss of control started when Hernandez hit former teammate Suzuki on the foot with a breaking ball in the seventh. He then hit Jeter in the arm to open the eighth and completed the trio when his 3-2 pitch to Rodriguez tailed up and in.

None of the Yankees felt any of the wayward pitches were intentional and Hernandez was apologetic.

"It was getting away. It was a changeup to A-Rod," Hernandez said. "I feel bad.

Rodriguez has been durable this season after failing to play at least 150 games since 2007. He had played in all but three of the Yankees 97 games this year after playing just 99 last season.

But A-Rod's production has fallen way off. He was hitting just .274 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs entering Tuesday's game, although he was hitting .328 over his last 16 games.

With the acquisition of Suzuki on Monday to take over for injured left-fielder Brett Gardner, the Yankees appeared to be done with any big moves before the non-waiver trade deadline in a week. Losing A-Rod, though, could change that. New York's main option at third base now is the injury-prone Chavez.

"We'll just have to talk about it and see what we come up with," Chavez said. "Whatever he asks me to do I'll just give it my best shot."

Rodriguez joins Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Michael Pineda and Gardner as key pieces of the Yankees puzzle who have missed time with injuries.

Whatever the time-frame on Rodriguez, it's one more obstacle for the Yankees to overcome. They do have the luxury of a seven-game lead in the AL East, even with their recent West Coast slump.

"You find out how good you are. Other guys are going to have to step up. We can't feel sorry for ourselves because no one else is going to," Jeter said. "It's going to be a challenge, but it's been a challenge for all the injuries we've had this season."

Lost in the concern over Rodriguez was starter Freddy Garcia (4-4) looking more like the 2001 version that won 18 games with the Mariners and was an All-Star. Garcia struck out a season-high eight and retired the final 15 he faced before being pulled with one out in the eighth.

But Garcia was pitching from behind after the Yankees offense failed in getting to Hernandez in both the fourth and fifth innings when New York had runners in scoring position and couldn't get clutch hits. Teixeira added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but reliever Lucas Luetge struck out Raul Ibanez with two on to end the threat.

That was all secondary to what the absence of Rodriguez will mean for the Yankees.

"We're going to have to change it around a little," manager Joe Girardi said. "He had been swinging the bat really good too. We've had to overcome some things so far, we're just going to have to continue to do it."

NOTES: Rodriguez recorded his 2,000th career strikeout when he went down swinging in the sixth inning on a changeup from Hernandez. ... Suzuki was hit by a pitch for the first time since July 20, 2010. ... Hernandez hit three batters in a game for the third time in his career.

Long Term Care in Mexico | Aging Well / Elder Care Navigation

A handful of Americans have made what at first glance seems a radical decision. They have opted to put themselves or their loved ones into an assisted living or nursing home in Mexico. If that sounds extreme, consider their reasons; costs at a fraction of those in the US, high quality medical and personal care, and the reason many foreigners go to Mexico, the weather.

Before you dismiss this unconventional choice, think about the demographic crisis that is just around the corner. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 70% of Americans have less than $25,000 saved for retirement and 25% don?t? contribute anything at all. At fifty, if one doesn?t already have a significant retirement fund, its highly unlikely one can be created that will be adequate when its needed. Coupled with the estimate that 40% of the huge baby boom generation, just beginning to hit retirement age, will need assisted living or nursing home care costing a minimum of $3000 and $7000 per month respectively, and the magnitude of the problem becomes clear. The majority of Americans will not be able to afford long term care when they need it.

Of course we do have a social safety net, but state Medicaid budgets are already at the breaking point and many states have begun to reduce funding. (Even if the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act gets widely implemented, this is money to cover more people, not more money for any individual.) In any case, if you think that this is an acceptable option for yourself or a loved one, I urge you to visit Medicaid only facilities in your community. Many of these are run and staffed by caring people,? but for most residents, these are places of last resort and they feel like it.

By contrast, quality assisted and nursing care can be had in Mexico for $1000-$1700 per month. For many working and middle class Americans, their Social Security income would be sufficient to cover care.

But there is a cultural argument for superior care in Mexico as well as an economic one. Clich? as it sounds, elders are valued and treated with respect in Mexican culture and this attitude carries over to seniors in long term care. Americans who have loved ones in Mexican homes say that the warmth is palpable and that they are often treated like family.? (See links below)

In addition, the direct care workers in Mexican facilities are paid an adequate living wage and are considered members of a valued profession. Contrast that to American CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) who are paid less than $10/hour, just enough to insure that they and their families will remain in poverty. In fact, over 40% of CNAs in the states are on some type of government assistance. Couple that with the low respect this profession commands and one can understand why turnover rates for these jobs remains at an astounding 70% per year even after the recession.

Are there barriers to this kind of solution to elder care? Of course there are. The main one is distance and the frequency one would be able to visit loved ones. But many Americans already live at great distances from their elderly parents. In any case, ask yourself,? Would I rather visit my parents weekly in a facility that feels depressing, the care is only minimally acceptable, and no one seems to know my parent well, or twice a year for a longer period where my parent is happy and I am confident he or she is receiving excellent treatment from caring people.?

Another current impediment is that fact that the Mexican assisted living and nursing home industries are underdeveloped. Placement of elders in these kinds of facilities?is uncommon in Mexican life. As a consequence, most long term care homes that cater to Americans are located in areas where expatriates have congregated for a long time such as Lake Chapala, San Miguel de Allende, or the Baja coast. Even there the number of facilities is low.? The industry is gearing up however in anticipation of the expected need. AMAR, the Mexican Association for Retirement Communities, predicts that there will be robust growth from Mexican providers as well as American long term care housing corporations expanding across the border.

Critics often disparage the phenomenon of the aged moving to Mexico for care as ?elder outsourcing?. This is a matter of perspective however. Tens of thousands of US citizens already get their medical care abroad (medical tourism) and are very happy about the results. In any case, one could counter that what we often do here is not much more than??elder warehousing?.

Unfortunately, the phenomenon of explosive costs for elder care in the United States will not go away anytime soon. I consider the option of receiving care in Mexico a positive and rational response. Like anywhere, research and visits to the facilities are extremely important when choosing a place to receive long term care. This may be more expensive and time consuming in the short run but future low cost and high quality of care may make it very worthwhile.

Canada 'spy' sold US, Australia, UK secrets: report

A Canadian naval officer arrested this year for allegedly leaking secrets may also have compromised top level Australian, British and American intelligence, a report said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Delisle, a naval intelligence officer, was charged by a Canadian court in January with communicating over the past five years "with a foreign entity, information that the government of Canada is taking measures to safeguard".

Canadian reports said Ottawa expelled four Russian diplomats in the aftermath of Delisle's arrest, although Moscow denied this.

On Wednesday the Sydney Morning Herald, citing Australian security sources, said Delisle also allegedly sold to Moscow signals intelligence -- information gathered by the interception of radio and radar signals -- collected by the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

It said much of the information was more highly classified than the disclosures attributed to US Private Bradley Manning, who is accused of releasing a vast cache of classified files to whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

The newspaper said Delisle was the subject of high-level consultations between the Australian and Canadian governments and was discussed at a secret international conference in New Zealand earlier this year.

An Australian security source quoted by the newspaper said Delisle's access was "apparently very wide" and that "Australian reporting was inevitably compromised".

"The signals intelligence community is very close, we share our intelligence overwhelmingly with the US, UK and Canada," a former Australian Defence Signals Directorate officer said.

An Australian Defence Department spokeswoman said the government did not comment on intelligence matters.

"However, the Australian government takes national security very seriously and is continually reviewing and strengthening policies, practices and techniques to ensure Australia's national security," she told AFP.

Delisle's offences allegedly occurred in the Canadian capital Ottawa, Halifax and in towns in Ontario and Nova Scotia provinces, court documents said.

He has been charged under Canada's Security of Information Act, with a conviction carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Hispanic rivalries add to mix of hardball Florida politics

Rep. Ana Rivas Logan?s opponents call her loads of names on the campaign trail.

But one seemed to bother her more than others: ?Nicaraguan.?

?They?re making calls to the little old Cubans, telling them, ?Don?t vote for her. She?s a Nicaraguan. Your commitment is with the Cuban vote,?? a choked-up Logan said last week about her bare-knuckle race against fellow Republican Rep. Jose Felix ?Pepe? Diaz.

Welcome to Miami.

This is a place where calling the daughter of Cuban parents a ?Nicaraguan? is a slur even though she was born in Nicaragua and says so on her website. Diaz denies participating in or authorizing the attack.

The fact that it was 1) used against the Cuban-American lawmaker and 2) worked enough to deeply unsettle her is a sign of the hardball politics in Miami-Dade. And it stands as a clear sign that Florida?s Hispanic vote is anything but monolithic.

Just beyond the Spanish-English language barrier is a not-so-brave world of ethnic tensions, borderline racism and nationalistic pride that will subtly play out this election season ? from the Rivas Logan-Diaz state House District 116 race to the top of the presidential ticket.

In the presidential race, Puerto Ricans are overwhelmingly Democratic and are expected to vote heavily for President Obama in Central Florida. Cuban voters, overwhelmingly Republican, are largely Romney supporters in South Florida. Nationally, the majority of Hispanic voters have ties to Mexico and vote for Democrats.

Pollsters beware. Sample Hispanics in one Florida region and you?ll often get different survey results than if you polled Hispanics in another part of the state.

The intramural Hispanic rivalries are bewildering to anyone from outside the state.

Ana Navarro, a Miami-based Republican of Nicaraguan descent who?s a CNN pundit, said she has only experienced anti-Nicaraguan sentiment once from another Hispanic and that such run-ins are rare. And, in the contact sport of politics, Navarro said Rep. Logan needs to develop a thicker skin.

?Ana Rivas Logan should stop crying and fight back,? Navarro said of the attacks on the lawmaker. ?She has been raised a Cuban-American in Miami. It?s what she considers herself and identifies with. That?s all good and fine. But she needs to denounce the use of her country of birth to divide our communities as unacceptable and offensive.?

She noted that former Republican Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a Cuban-American, successfully pushed a 1997 act that granted legal residency to hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguan and Central American immigrants. Many of them vote, she said, and they?ll punish prejudice at the polls.

In the state Capitol, the prejudice is on display as well. Whites and blacks from across the state and from both parties can be heard in the halls muttering about ?crazy Cubans.? So do anonymous commenters on The Miami Herald website, or from those in Broward who say they ?fled? Miami when it got too Spanish-speaking for their tastes. It?s all evidence that, no matter the location or race or ethnicity, prejudice is a human frailty. And politics plays with it.

When he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2010, former state House Speaker Marco Rubio took umbrage when he was called ?a slick package from Miami? by his opponent, then-Gov. Charlie Crist.

Investing in Residential Property

Spelling Manor, Holmby HillsResidential property investment is one of the safest of all forms of investments, and it has made more Australian millionaires than any other market. Property investment is not, however, foolproof, nor absolutely certain. There are risks involved in residential property investment at all levels, and this article considers some of these. Off-plan investment, home construction and home purchase all have their own risks and benefits.

Equity

Buying a property is one of the much safer investments that you can make, but as the UK and USA markets have demonstrated, there is little doubt that the markets are susceptible to economic changes. When buying a property, there are two simple rules that you need to follow to keep your investment safer.

The first is to buy in areas where there is room for growth. Buying the largest property in a developed and expensive area means that you will likely be left with just a small amount of growth. A smaller home near a much larger property, however, is far more likely to increase dramatically in value than the larger property. Where you buy your property and the size of that property will have a huge impact on the profit that can be made from it.

The second rule of property investment is to avoid negative equity. Negative equity is what caused the UK and USA markets to collapse, because the amount of money that people had borrowed was far greater than the value of their homes. Avoiding negative equity is very important, because this will prevent you from losing anything more than the property that you have borrowed against. Negative equity must be avoided at all costs in property investment.

Cost Reduction

An important element of residential property investment is to reduce the cost of your investments, wherever possible. Buying or building the largest and nicest property will greatly limit your return on the property and increase your costs too. Cost reduction can be achieved in two ways.

The first is through the construction of your own kit home. If you have land that you can build on, then building a kit home will greatly increase the value, provide you with a tenancy income, and reduce the initial investment that you have to make. Reducing your costs in this manner will greatly reduce your risk, without damaging your returns. ?Kit homes cut out the need for architects and many other building processes to greatly reduce the costs.

The second way to achieve costreduction is to consider investment property ?off the plan?. Off-plan property is property that has not yet been built. In other words, you purchase the promised building before it is complete. Purchasing ?off the plan? will greatly decrease the initial investment that you have to make and will also give you a significant increase in value, as soon as the build is complete.

There are obvious risks to buying ?off the plan?, but it is possible to limit your risk to just the value of a deposit. This option for reducing costs, however, can lead to some impressive increases in value over a short investment period.

Minimising Risk

Overall, the investment in property is a safe investment. As long as you are sure to buy or build in a good area, avoid negative equity, and limit your investment wherever possible, you will be able to reap good benefits from such investment. However, remember to diversify your investments by investing in different areas, so that if anything does happen to the market, you will never lose everything.

Hang Your Hat | I Am A Mess!

Post image for Hang Your Hat

Greetings! Its been a few days since I?ve been able to blog, and boy have I missed it! I am so excited to share some pictures of my NEW HOME!

In case you missed it, here?s a little backstory on our move: Jason, Dylan and I own a house in Cartersville, Georgia, which is nice but nearly and hour from Jason?s work and the town is fairly limited in terms of entertaining a child day after day. We decided to move to a rental house in Smyrna, Georgia, which is closer to Jay?s work (less than ten minutes!) and rent out the house we own in Cartersville with the hope of eventually selling it. It was complicated to sort everything out, but we did, and so last month I took Dylan to New Hampshire to visit with my family while Jay coordinated and executed our move. We planned it this way because we knew it would be hard to do a move with Dylan underfoot and it would be less traumatic for him to leave his house if he had time away from it first.

All that is to explain how I found myself in the unconventional situation of getting off a plane in Atlanta and driving to a new house that had been fully organized and decorated without my two cents. I think most women would have a hard time having zero input into the look and feel of their house, but not me. I know my strengths and weaknesses and interior design in not a strength. Also, Jay enjoys the moving process and setting up a new house, so it worked out for both of us!

So now, I share with you snapshots of my new house just moments after I saw it for the first time. I?ll provide thoughts and commentary along the way.

First, the exterior front:

IMG_2114 (640x480)

And exterior back:

IMG_2118 (640x480)

I love that we have a safe yard with nice green grass (so unlike our old house). I?m not an HGTV person so I apologize for using the wrong terminology, but there is a square concrete slab outside the back door that is perfect for setting up a water table (Dylan?s current favorite activity) because it reduces mud.

We are really in an ideal spot in the neighborhood because everything is right nearby. We can easily walk to the pool and tennis courts and the community also has a playground and lake for fishing, both of which are directly across from our house.

IMG_2128 (640x480)

IMG_2129 (640x480)

Back to the house. The first floor boasts a master bedroom, master bathroom, sitting area, dining area, half bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and a couple closets.

The front door:

IMG_2092 (640x480)

And just to the left of it, the dining area:

IMG_2091 (640x480)

Across from the door is a sitting area:

IMG_2093 (640x480)

Jay surprised me with all new furniture in this room. If you had asked me if I wanted black chairs I would have said ?no,? but the second I saw them, I fell in love.

IMG_2096 (640x480)

Across from the sitting area is a staircase and beyond that is the kitchen:

IMG_2094 (640x480)

IMG_2082 (640x480)

I?m so happy the cabinets are white! I love white in kitchens!

Jay designed the kitchen to look like a diner! Unfortunately, the retro diner-style table and chair set he ordered hasn?t been delivered yet, but I?ll show you the rest of the space:

IMG_2079 (640x480)

IMG_2084 (640x480)

IMG_2083 (640x480)

IMG_2086 (640x480)

(I?ll also show you the finished product once the table gets here.)

Exiting the kitchen you can see the master bedroom on the opposite side of the house:

IMG_2088 (640x480)

Jay had to merge two sets of furniture into the master bedroom, so one side has brown furniture and the other has black. This felt a little weird to me at first, but now that I?m used to it I think it works.

Black furniture:

IMG_2097 (640x480)

Brown furniture:

IMG_2098 (640x480)

This is a classic example of how sometimes it better to just let one person do something rather than have a back and forth discussion, because if I had been a part of the move I know I would have made a big deal about not combining both sets of furniture and we probably would?ve ended up doing something drastic like selling it all off and buying a new bedroom set, but since I wasn?t there Jay just did what he felt like and I?m totally okay with it!

Here?s part of the master bathroom:

IMG_2104 (640x480)

Not pictured on the first floor is my closet, the shower in the master bathroom and a second bathroom off the kitchen.

Shall we go upstairs?

IMG_2070 (640x480)

(Yes, I am aware this a picture leading downstairs. I don?t have one going up.)

The upstairs holds Dylan?s room, the living room, an office/exercise/guest room, a storage room and a third bathroom. There?s also an open hallway that looks out over the bottom level.

Dylan?s room:

IMG_2048 (640x480)

IMG_2049 (640x480)

The living room is large and very comfy. It feels like a cave.

IMG_2058 (640x480)

There?s even a bar and sink in the corner.

IMG_2059 (640x480)

And one of the many play stations for Dylan scattered throughout the house.

IMG_2057 (640x480)

Here?s the office/guest room/exercise room:

IMG_2054 (640x480)

IMG_2055 (640x480)

IMG_2077 (640x480)

And lastly, the hallway that overlooks the bottom level:

IMG_2068 (640x480)

Here?s what you see if you look down:

IMG_2052 (640x480)

IMG_2073 (640x480)

IMG_2050 (640x480)

IMG_2071 (640x480)

I?ve been here a few days and have a few thoughts on the new house and the move in general:

1) There are a lot of things in this house that are similar to our old house, only better. I thought I would miss our old house more than I do. I am used to moving at this point in my life but I?m still surprised by how quickly I can move on from the place I last left.

2) Having Jay?s office so close to home is going to be so healthy for our family. Its been fun having him pop in and out during the day! He has much more flexibility with his schedule now and I can tell we will be seeing a lot more of each other, which is awesome!

3) Dylan likes it here. Jason filled the house with new toys and Dylan is still discovering them, but even more than that, you can tell that Jay designed it with Dylan?s needs and wants in mind. There are play areas all around and everything feels safe. He can navigate the stairs on his own and for whatever reason it just seems like he is safer here! Maybe it?s the layout?

4) The garage door is right off the kitchen so when I come home with groceries all I have to do is step out of my car and into the kitchen. At the old house I had a very long, steep flight of stairs. No stairs = luxurious. I used to put off buying heavy and/or bulky things like toilet paper and clothing detergent, but not anymore!

5) I love my husband. For reals. He did such an amazing job creating a warm, safe (again!) and fun house for our family! I?m looking forward to enjoying this space with him and Dylan. I?m also looking forward to having more to DO in this town!

As always, I?ll keep you posted!

Heal your thyroid by banishing inflammation, boosting immunity and ...

thyroid

Thursday, July 19, 2012 by: PF Louis

(NaturalNews) Thyroid hormones regulate other hormones, including the adrenal glands' adrenaline production. Thyroid gland hormones also influence cellular metabolism, digestion, libido, and overall energy.

There are three maladies involving the thyroid. Not everyone knows he or she has a thyroid issue even while exhibiting low energy or the inability to lose weight. One is an autoimmune disease and the other two are conditions.

The disease is known as Hashimoto's disease, which actually slowly destroys the thyroid while potentially creating both conditions. In addition to both conditions alternating with Hashimoto's disease, a swollen thyroid or goiter which becomes evident.

The two conditions are hypothyroidism, not enough hormone production or utlization, and the other is hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid that causes too much hormone production.

Hypothyroidism is the more common condition with its symptoms of low energy, fatigue, low libido, overweight problems and sensitivity to cold.

Hyperthyroidism can lead to nervousness, restlessness, manic behavior, and difficulty concentrating. Goiter and weight loss can also manifest. Pre-Nazi Germany used sodium fluoride to reduce the excessive hormone production of hyperthyroid patients.

Now, fluoride is in over 75 percent of USA's public water supplies, to keep American citizens dumb and docile with decreased thyroid hormone production.

It's a good idea to eliminate the possibility of Hashimoto's disease before pursuing hypothyroid solutions because the solutions for hypothyroidism are actually dangerous for those with Hashimoto's disease.

Hypothyroidism may be the most common hormonal deficiency in the Western world. It can even occur when the thyroid does produce enough thyroid hormones that are not utilized properly. That's known as thyroid hormone resistance, which produces the same symptoms as hypothyroidism.

Many who think they have fibromyalgia may simply have one of these two manifestations of hypothyroidism. According to Dr. John Lowe, conventional testing can fall short of diagnosing hypothyroidism, especially for those with thyroid hormone resistance.

That's because the T3, T4, and TH hormone counts can appear normal with someone experiencing thyroid hormone resistance. Also, allopathic endocrinologists often have a low expectation of normal. When it comes to remedying thyroid hormone resistance, the high amounts of thyroid hormone Dr. Lowe recommends shock the average endocrinologist.

Dr. Lowe has discovered that treating fibromyalgia complaints the same as hypothyroidism works very well. He uses an additional TRH (thyroid releasing hormone) test with symptom observations.

A simple self-administered test would be to take your temperature immediately upon waking up from a regular night's sleep. A low temperature indicates probable thyroid hormone deficiency, according to Donna Gates of Body Ecology website.

Here is an abbreviated list of other symptoms, most of which resemble fibromyalgia.

* Fatigue mistaken as fibromyalgia
* Unable to lose or stop gaining weight
* Feeling cold easily and often
* Dry skin, eyes, or hair
* Excess muscle tension
* Low immunity
* Low basal body temperature
* Delayed tendon reflex, when the foot returns position slowly after tapping the Achilles heel

Dr. Lowe's complete list of symptoms can be found here: (http://www.drlowe.com/geninfo/hyposymptoms.htm)

It's common for holistic health practitioners to recommend a quality iodine supplement or seaweed consumption. Iodine is thyroid food. They also recommend various natural thyroid hormone supplements.

It makes sense that increased fibromyalgia incidents coincide with a rise in iodine deficiency since iodine was taken out of table salt. Increasing iodine or using thyroid hormone supplements will help a thyroid that's hormone deficient.

Additionally, a comprehensive metabolic approach is required that could also prove helpful for Hoshimoto's disease.

Avoid inflammation causing processed foods and pharmaceutical drugs. Eat organically produced whole vegetables, nuts, legumes, fruits and grains (some say eliminate grains). Hydrate with non-fluoridated water, exercise, and stress less. (http://www.naturalnews.com/032129_fluoridation_intelligence.html)

Debate over a proposed property tax increase in DuPont continues

As promised, DuPont?s mayor brought forward recommendations on how to reform the city?s Business and Occupation Tax code and the revenue it could potentially generate during the July 17 DuPont City Council meeting.

However, based on the response from council members, no one is ready to act on those reforms right now, even if it would reduce the amount of the levy being put before the voters in November.

In fact, the council couldn?t even decide on a proposed levy rate or a ballot title. The only item council could agree upon is that a property tax increase is necessary to bring stable revenue into the city to help cover the city?s $1.27 million annual debt payment on the Civic Center properties. The city currently faces a $750,000 annual shortfall on the debt payment for the Civic Center.

It appears council members are caught in the middle of a tug-of-war over the constituents they should listen to when setting the property tax rate and what it should fund.

In one corner, you have Mayor Michael Grayum asking council to maintain current levels of service, which means covering the Civic Center debt and paying for three firefighter positions.

In another corner, some members of the Community Finance Committee recommend a property tax increase, B&O tax reform, and fee increases to maintain current levels of service, and grow them by adding an extra police officer.

Then there are members of the community who only want the property tax levy to cover the cost of the Civic Center debt and nothing more.

The proposed levy amount under discussion ranges between 75 and 97.5 cents per $1,000 assessed value. For a home valued at $300,000, this is an increase of roughly $227 to $280 per year.

Councilman Larry Wilcox said he is willing to support a levy of 75 cents but does not want to increase the B&O tax or reform it. Councilman Mike Courts and Councilwoman Linda Jordan support a 97.5 cent levy to cover the debt service and maintain current levels of service with the city?s fire department. Both Courts and Jordan support reforming the city?s B&O tax at a later date.

Councilman Roger Westman supports a levy increase of 75 cents to be put towards only the debt on the civic center. Councilman John Ehrenreich supports a levy increase anywhere between 86 and 97.5 cents and does not support increasing revenues through B&O reform at this time.

Councilwoman Penny Coffey thinks the ballot title should be written for the Civic Center debt only at the rate of 88.6 cents. Coffey was in favor of B&O tax reform after doing what she calls ?methodical research? on the subject. However, she is against raising the B&O tax up to two-tenths of a percent.

The current B&O rate is at one-tenth of a percent. The council has the authority to raise the rate up to two-tenths of a percent. If the B&O tax was increased to the maximum amount allowed, an additional $195,000 in revenue would be generated. The problem with increasing the B&O rate across the board, and not selectively, is that small businesses in DuPont would get hit the hardest, while large businesses such as State Farm Insurance, Intel, Pier One and Dania, or any other business that does not generate city business or sales tax, would continue to pay little or no B&O tax into the city.

The council could raise the B&O rate selectively, such as targeting the extraction tax on gravel and forestry products. DuPont Finance Director Sandi Hines has confirmed to South Puget Sound News that she is following up with CalPortland on the rate they are paying for the extraction tax. Hines is also following up on recent timber harvests to see if the city has collected on those taxes as well.

Councilwoman Kathy Trotter, who owns PJ?s Sweet Factory in DuPont, thinks the city?s B&O code needs to be reformed, but as a business owner, she wants to see something in return, such as the hiring of a community development director, and she wants the business community to have a say on the matter first.

Mayor Grayum stated that he had talked to DuPont?s Commercial Owner?s Association, and the feedback was that the reforms and the process of talking to the business owners in the coming months were appropriate.

During the meeting?s public comment period, Larry Ackerman, Director of the Northwest Landing Homeowners Association and Commercial Owner?s Association, encouraged council members and residents to take a hard look at what they wanted their city to become, and go from there.

The DuPont City Council has meetings scheduled for July 24 and 31 to solidify the levy amount and the ballot title so that the proposal can appear on the November ballot. If they fail to do so, or if the levy fails in November, council will be faced with drastic budget cuts to all city services.

DON?T MAKE THE MISTAKE MOST BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE BY LETTING JUST ANY INSURANCE BROKER QUOTE YOUR WORKERS COMPENSATION INSURANCE THE WAY YOUR GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE IS RATED MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

IF YOUR POLICY IS IMPROPERLY RATED, THEN YOU COULD BE NEEDLESSLY FLUSHING CASH DOWN THE TOILET.

I quickly found out that life insurance wasn?t for me and we shut down our business. My brother and I went our separate ways. He became an insurance instructor to help individuals get licensed and I got my property and casualty license and worked for other brokers/ agents learning business insurance.I landed with an Allstate agent and learned how to become the top commercial auto insurance producer for the company.

After one year I realized my potential and what a dead end it was working for another agent so my brother and I opened our own Allstate agency together in 2008. My first year in business for myself my agency became the number commercial auto office in CA.

Everything was great my first year in business, but I started to realize how much money I was leaving on the table by being a captive Allstate agent. I had a big book of construction workers of all trades, but I could only write their commercial trucks.

Allstate doesn?t write workers comp or general liability insurance so I decided to sell my Allstate agency and go independent.

I opened my current brokerage Cal Commercial Insurance in September of 2009. Over the last 6 months I researched all the carriers for my construction clients and now have the best markets for everything including workers comp, general liability, commercial auto insurance, and bonds.Being a contractors insurance specialist I do extra research on how to favor the rating factors on my clients policies to help my clients save up to 50%!! How you rate a policy determines the premium. This is the service and added value I bring to the construction industry for their business insurance needs.
